We have partnered with the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Kelaniya to shape a coordinated and impactful response to the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah. Their on‑the‑ground expertise and deep community reach enabled us to identify a regional hospital that was severely affected by the floods and in urgent need of support. This collaboration ensures that our efforts are informed, targeted, and positioned to create sustainable impact. More comprehensive updates will be shared as this work progresses.

Context

In late November 2025, Cyclone Ditwah made landfall in Sri Lanka, bringing heavy rains, widespread flooding, and devastating landslides across the country. By mid‑December, official reports confirmed more than 640 lives lost and over 230,000 people displaced, with nearly 2 million individuals and 500,000 families affected. The cyclone has severely disrupted livelihoods and essential services—including healthcare—further straining an economy already struggling to recover. While initial estimates placed immediate physical damages at USD 4.1 billion, the long‑term recovery and reconstruction needs are expected to be significantly higher.

Need

We have partnered with the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Kelaniya to support the post‑cyclone recovery of the District General Hospital (DGH) Chilaw—one of the hardest‑hit healthcare institutions in the country.

When the waters rose, the hospital’s ground floor was completely submerged. Lifesaving medical equipment was destroyed. Operating theaters were damaged. Essential supplies were swept away. For the thousands of families who rely on DGH Chilaw for care, the cyclone didn’t just damage a building, it disrupted their only lifeline. Early assessments estimate recovery costs at more than Rs. 1.2 billion (approximately USD 3.8 million).

DGH Chilaw serves as the primary government hospital for the Puttalam District. Nearly 1,000 healthcare workers serve here, and its 645+ beds support a population that depends on it in moments of crisis, birth, illness, and recovery. Restoring this hospital means restoring hope, dignity, and access to care for hundreds of thousands of people.

Your donations will directly enable the the District General Hospital Chilaw replace damaged furniture and help restore essential supplies lost in the floods.
